Wooden dummy meaning: 

The wooden dummy is a training device used by martial art practitioners to better their skills. It represents the arms and legs of a human body, creating obstacles for the trainee to cultivate fighting skills. Why do you need a wooden dummy?

Wooden dummies are a clear and easy way to supplement martial arts training. Martial art trainers believe to achieve the highest level of mastery one has to practice and develop strong reflex. There is a misconception that martial arts are all about learning fighting skills. But this is not true, your fighting skills are of no use if can't anticipate an attack and block it. 

A wooden dummy emphasizes the importance of practice to develop reflexes in martial arts practitioner.  Repeated practice is necessary to be able to use blocking style, kicks, and strikes naturally and spontaneously.  Monks have been practicing their defenses on wooden dummies from a long period. These dummies represent the energy, obstacles, and strength of a human body. Even though these objects are unreal, they help in polishing ones contact reflexes while training.
